After they cleaned her up, I held her in my arms for the first time. I help her
tiny body in my arms and looked down at her. To this day, I still claim that
Taylor looked into my eyes and, for a brief moment, a smile crossed her small
face.
As she got older, we would play more. One of my favorite memories from our
childhood is reading to her every night as she sat in my lap, intently and
wonderfully listening to the story.
When she entered middle school,
boys came into the picture. In our town, the middle school sat next to the high
school. I felt it was my duty as the older brother to keep watch of the boys
that she talked to before and after school, a habit that my sister was not
pleased I had picked up.
One time, when Taylor was a
freshman in high school, she was going on a date with one of the school’s star
lacrosse players. He arrived as my sister was finishing her make up, or hair or
whatever it is you girls do, so I answered the door. I sat her date down in the
living room and interrogated him before I made him leave, flustered and
red-faced. Taylor was livid, but I didn’t think he was good enough for my little
sister. He wasn’t the best, and she deserves the best.
Finally, I met “the best.” I
had been hearing about Peter for months before Taylor finally let me meet him. I
guess she was worried that I would scare him away, too. We finally met at
Thanksgiving dinner last year. He pulled up to the house in his motorcycle, and
I immediately had an uneasy feeling. But throughout dinner, I saw a look in my
sister’s eyes that I had never seen before. It was a loom of complete happiness.
I saw that he looked at her the way had when I held her in my arms as a newborn.
He looked at her with a love that could be unmatched by anything in the world.
It was at that moment that I
realized that I no longer needed to protect Taylor, but that the job was passed
on to someone else.
So congratulations to Taylor
and Peter. I would not be standing here, giving them my blessing if I did not
believe that Peter is the perfect husband for my little sister.
I love you, sis. I’ve never
seen you look more beautiful and radiant than you do today.
Congratulations, to both of
you.
