Write It Down
First, you might want to try some stream of conscious writing where you
basically sit down in front of your computer or with a pen and paper and write
down all of your thoughts. Don’t worry about spelling, flow, or repeating
yourself; just get all of your feelings out there. After you have everything
written down you can then comb over what you have written and decide what will
stay and what will go. You might not want to get too sappy, so cross out those
items right away. If you don’t care about getting sappy, then leave those ones
in play. Think about what you would like your daughter to hear and what you
think she may like to hear from you. Also think about what you would like your
son in law and what he might want to hear from you. Once you have everything
written down you can sort of hone in on the tone of the speech and go from
there. Think about advice on marriage, dreams, and hopes of yours for the new
couple, and your happiness for both the bride and the groom and let these
thoughts guide your your speech at your daughter's wedding.
A Classy Opening
Starting a speech at the wedding is often the most difficult time because
until you have that direction you really don’t have anything to guide you. To
get you warmed up and make sure that all of the guests are paying attention, you
can simply welcome all of the guests to the reception and thank them for coming
to share your daughter’s big day. Since the
mother and
father of the bride
typically are the hosts of the wedding reception it isn’t out of line for the
father of the bride to welcome and thank those that are in attendance, and it
serves as a great icebreaker. You can then talk about what you had imagined your
daughter’s wedding day would be, mention the first time you saw the newly wedded
couple together, or comment on the beauty of your daughter this particular day.
An Unforgettable Closing
Now that you’ve figured out your general theme and you’ve opened up with a
welcoming, shared some hopes, thoughts and dreams for the new couple, you’ll
need to come up with a great closing. You can thank everyone for coming again,
and then also thank your daughter and your son in law for allowing you to be
part of what will be an unforgettable day.
If humor, religion, jokes, family stories, or any other things help you get
your message across, don’t be afraid to use it! Share your thoughts and emotion
in your own way, the bride, and the son in law will appreciate it more that way!
